Thanks for your comment, Erik – good to hear from you again!
In this age of information overwhelm I think it is important to figure out how to curate knowledge. One easy way to do this is to allow experts to do the heavy lifting for us. Take brain surgery. I do not imagine that after watching a few Youtube videos on brain surgery I am now in a position to come up with my own method.
“After all, how hard can it be? It’s just a brain, right?”
Meditation can appear deceptively simple, but in reality it is a complex science. After all we are dealing with the human mind here, which is immeasurably complex. Furthermore, unlike brain surgery, meditation is an unregulated practice. Anyone can claim to be an expert and write a book or start a class, while they have close to zero understanding of the long term effects of what they advocating or how it might affect different people differently.
That’s why I urge people to try to find a genuine expert and let them filter and sort the useful (and safe) practices from the confusing avalanche of data and guide us on our journey.
It’s a beautiful metaphor! And very enlightening
